October 8th is Read for the Record Day! All around the world, people will be reading the same book, Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar, to children in schools, daycares, homes, anywhere! My class will be participating and reading together, and hopefully we will break the world record we helped set last year when we all read Corduroy together! If you would like to participate, head on over to Read for the Record to sign up! After you read, just confirm your numbers by following the directions on the site and you'll be part of the record-breaking action.
As a side note, the mother ship behind all of this is Jumpstart for Young Children, a nonprofit organization that pairs college students with preschoolers from low-income communities to promote literacy, school readiness, and a lifelong love of reading and learning. I've had the privilege to be involved with Jumpstart for a number of years and I truly believe in the work that they're doing.
Regular reviews will be back soon but in the meantime, dig out and revisit your copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, or any other book that was a childhood favorite and relive those memories. There are worse ways to spend a Thursday, that's for sure.
