50 words or less: This novella is the start of the Immortals After Dark series and lays the groundwork for the mythology of the book; it also tells how Myth the Valkyrie met (and fell for) Nickolai Wroth, the vampire. Yum.
First all, that is not a typo- the entire novella, plus excerpts from all the other IAD books and the cover of the new one, Pleasure of a Dark Prince are included as a free .pdf download from the address above. The novella was originally included in a short story anthology but why worry about that when you can download the story for free?
Anyway, The Warlord Wants Forever is totally in keeping with the tone of the rest of the IAD series- surprisingly, I hadn't read it until now (although I haven't read Kiss of a Demon King yet either...I know, I know, I'm punching myself.) For those just tuning in, the IAD series is about the Lore, which consists of basically every mythical creature ever created, ever. Except for one tiny detail- they're not mythical. They're real, with their own rules, cultures, and history.
All of these factors collide when Nickolai Wroth, a human warrior who was turned vampire as he was dying on the battlefield, meets Myst, a Valkyrie with a hell of an Achilles heel. The sparks fly pretty much from the first moment these two share a paragraph but it takes both of them awhile to overcome their prejudices and preconceived notions of how the other should behave. There's a whole lot of steam packed into these few short pages too; the main characters are compatible in more ways than one.
One of my favorite things about Kresley Cole's writing is her snappy dialogue and the way she establishes each character as a separate entity with his or her own personality right out of the gate. That's definitely in play here, although I enjoy the banter and dialogue in her full-length novels a little bit more than I did here. I almost feel like this couple got robbed from an even fuller and more satisfying happily ever after just because they got a novella and not a full length book. Sigh.
Anyway, as if I needed another reason to love this series, The Warlord Wants Forever put me in a good frame of mind to read and review Deep Kiss of Winter, the double bill from Kresley Cole and Gena Showalter, for a blog tour on Monday 12/21. I'm marking this installment down just a tad for being a little less polished than the other books in the series, but make no mistake, you want to read the whole series and you want to read it now. Trust me, I know these things.
Overall Grade: A-
