Illustrated Friday: The Monster Princess

The Monster PrincessWhile bullying and meanness seem to float in and out of the popular consciousness, I think it's safe to say that these issues never really go away.  The Monster Princess is a sweet story with a powerful message- that there are many different kinds of special, and that your character is way, way more important than what you look like or what clothes you wear.  All of that would be cold comfort in the moment after a taunt or a tease, but this is the kind of book you can read to a young person (especially a girl who's starting to realize that people put an awful lot of emphasis on things like clothes and being cute and popular) to build resilience and to encourage them to be proud of their sense of self, whatever form that sense may happen to take.  That's a lesson all of us grownups could stand to remember too, don't you think?  Happy Friday!
