Let's get the carnival ball rolling with the topic that's on everybody's mind, and never fails to stir up controversy: Why read indie books?
Selling books at all is a tough thing. With new titles constantly coming out, grabbing the attention of readers is like shouting in a stadium full of people and expecting everyone to about face and pay attention. This is doubly true in the digital environment, where there isn't a tangible product that someone can pick up and touch in the checkout line or while browsing through the store and decide to buy on impulse. Readers have to be grabbed and brought to a specific access point so they can decide to purchase a digital book out of the sea of titles that are available. Readers have an abundance of choices when it comes to books to read, and to buy.
So where do indie books fit into all of this? Well, the world of indie books is one where everyone can find a place. Every indie book or story is the result of someone getting an idea, sitting down, writing that story, and choosing to share it with the entire universe. This means that there are as many different kinds and flavors of story as there are people on the planet; there's literally something for everyone.
In short, indie books are all about infinite possibility.
But what about the story quality? The editing? I don't want to spend money on something if it turns out to be gibberish. I can't think of a single person who openly seeks out sub-par products to purchase. And while many indie and self-published books are released without the surrounding support people that are available and utilized by traditional publishing outlets, I've found enough typos, gaffs, bloopers, awkwardly worded sentences, and editing chop jobs in traditionally published books to convince me that being traditionally published doesn't mean that a book will be immaculate.
You can't judge a book by its cover- or its publisher, you know?
I decided to start the Declare Your Independence Indie Author Giveaway Carnival for two reasons:
1. Everyone likes to win things, and the authors I'm spotlighting this month have been more than awesome in providing prizes and support, and
2. This is an opportunity for people to take a chance on authors and books they might not have discovered otherwise. We have paranormal romance, thrillers, mysteries, steampunk, horror, dystopian, YA, comedy, science fiction, fantasy, and many other genres represented.
Indie books = infinite possibilities. What more could you want?
